Euthanasia is still a matter of numerous debates and arguments. Although it has been legalized in some countries, it appears to be a total taboo in others. Besides, it has always been the main cause of debates based on religious, social, and ethical aspects. The idea lies behind the will of a person who is ill to pass away. Some consider it as suicide while others think it is the only way to die in dignity and peace.

In this essay, I will try to highlight some core Euthanasia advantages and downsides to consider by modern society. The first thing we need to do is to understand what this term means.

Euthanasia is a process when a sick person takes a dosage of medication that puts his or her life to an end. The issue comes with a variety of characteristics based upon psychological, moral, and religious aspects that we always need to take into account depending on the country or region.

On the other hand, it provides a simple and painful method for the patients to pass away. It might be the only opportunity for those who suffer from severe pains or do not want their relatives to suffer emotionally. What’s more, being bound to the bed without a chance to move can result in huge treatment costs without even knowing if the patient will ever recover.

Of course, constant pain can make a person want Euthanasia. But should we really take this desire for granted? Or is it the easiest way to avoid coping with a difficult situation that we may all have at different points of life? Identifying the Euthanasia pros and cons will help us to answer these questions.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Euthanasia

I would like to start with the benefits that Euthanasia delivers out of the box. It is not only about saving money for the family and preventing them from psychological suffering but also about dignity and peace.

Euthanasia pros:

• No more suffering – the main and the most important advantage of Euthanasia is the fact that it can put all sufferings to an end right at once. We will never be able to understand people who constantly suffer from severe pains no matter how hard we try. The US Supreme Court has already handled the case like that. As a result, a dignified and timely death was considered as an appropriate variant. The matter took place back in 1996 but the issue itself is still argued.
• Death with Dignity – this is another doubtful advantage of Euthanasia. When suffering from long-term illnesses, patients are generally dependent on nurses or relatives who need to spend weeks and months near their beds. It includes assistance when going to the toilet, eating, bathing, and so on. A few people can stand the weakens and the inability to take care of themselves. On the other hand, Euthanasia makes it possible for them to take control of their lives. Patients are the only ones responsible for the decision they make. The way they will be remembered by family and friends plays a huge role when it comes to dignity.
• Reduced Costs – one will hardly argue that treatment can be very expensive, especially in case of a serious fatal disease. By the way, the financial aspect became the main reason for 66% of patients in New Zealand to claim Euthanasia. Medical services are very expensive not mentioning drugs and medications that relatives need to buy each day instead of helping their kids or saving money for the future. Although some say that pain management can reduce the desire for euthanasia, they forget how much strong painkillers may cost not mentioning their effect on the patient’s health.

• Too Much Power for Doctors – some experts say that if Euthanasia is legalized, doctors and healthcare providers will gain too much power over the patients. It may lead to corruption. What’s more, some believe that laws and drastic measures again the assisted suicide fill help to fight back abuse. In addition, it will leave no chances for unscrupulous medics to provide malware medical practice or hide their low qualification. In some countries, human rights defenders describe Euthanasia as “the right to kill”.
• Murder Legalization – people, who are against Euthanasia, think that a legal assisted suicide will eventually lead to legalized murders. It may result in the termination of the idea about life as the main privilege. While most of us are obsessed with treatment costs and other inconveniences because of the bedridden patient, people may start looking for a simple way out.
• Religious aspect – in the majority of major religions, life is the godsend. It is the ultimate gift and only God is responsible for how it is going to end for every person. On the other hand, we all know about the Witch-hunt from the history initiated by the Catholic Church that actually burnt women hiding behind the Bible. So, the question here is not as clear as it may seem.

Arguments and debates around Euthanasia will never end. Meanwhile, some major Western countries have already legalized it. Despite all possible drawbacks in the face of corruption or religious disputes, we need to reserve people with strong pain and sufferings the right to choose. They owe their lives and no one can decide how they will pass away except for themselves.
